What impact do employee networks have in companies?

Three questions for Bianca Boudein, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at ERGO

ERGO organised its first employee networks day, at which existing employee networks presented themselves. How do networks function within a company? Three questions for Bianca Boudein, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager.

Dear Bianca Boudein, why are employee networks important in a company like ERGO?

Employee networks provide a platform for exchange, drive innovation and open doors. They make an important contribution to an inclusive and diverse corporate culture. Through the different perspectives and needs, networks give DEI management important impetus for further measures. In addition, thanks to their sponsors from the Board of Management, the networks have a direct line to top management and can therefore communicate their concerns and perspectives directly. This ensures that the impetus reaches not only DEI management, but also the highest level of the company.

The networks create spaces where colleagues can exchange ideas, support each other and learn from each other. This offers enormous potential for each individual, but also for the entire organisation. These networks are not only sources of personal support, but also powerful drivers of innovation. New ideas emerge when different perspectives come together. Problems are solved creatively because knowledge from different areas flows together. Change is set in motion because committed people work together.

What distinguishes the networks at ERGO?

Members of a network can engage in open and confidential personal exchanges – mutual listening and support are at the heart of this. At the same time, networks can provide inspiration to see, hear, promote and involve all people in a company on an equal footing. By implementing their own ideas, initiatives and measures, they create visibility and initiate change. The networks can see themselves as cultural shapers internally – and at the same time, they represent an employer for everyone externally.

What role does trust play?

When many employees are involved in various networks, it also shows that they feel comfortable in the company and are not afraid to disclose personal information. This is a question of trust.

At the moment, there are the networks women@ergo, pride@ergo, poc@ergo, väter@ergo and inklusion@ergo. A new network will soon be added for people who come to us from abroad to work at ERGO in Germany. There is also an initiative to set up a network for employees who report on their work on social media.

At ERGO, we demonstrate through many measures that diversity is welcome and that individuality can be embraced. Because only when every person feels comfortable expressing their own personality we can grow together – individually and as a company. Creativity and innovation based on a diverse workforce add significant value to the sustainable success of the company.

Thank you very much!
