During the Startup Week Düsseldorf 2024, ERGO presented the accelerator programme ‘ERGO ScaleHub’. Together with the two partners Wirtschaftsförderung Düsseldorf and TechHub.K67, the insurer has since been providing targeted support for start-ups and scale-ups in the fields of health, finance and insurance in the Düsseldorf economic region. After Camcom from India and rhyno solutions from Switzerland, another start-up is on board: the e-learning provider chunkx with locations in Eindhoven and Düsseldorf. In the interview, Florian Stieler and Theresa Voß introduce us to their company and its collaboration with ERGO.

Hello Theresa, hello Florian, you are the founders of chunkx, an AI solution for ‘adaptive microlearning’ in companies. What is it all about – and how and when did you found your company?

Florian: The idea for chunkx arose from our many years of experience in the corporate learning landscape and a fundamental challenge that we observe time and again: The faster markets and requirements develop, the more clearly the limitations of traditional learning formats become apparent. The growing skills gap, static training courses without a real sustainability component and, above all, the inefficient ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach lead to a significant loss of resources and often disappointing learning outcomes. These observations prompted me to look for a more effective solution.

Theresa: The turning point came in 2023 when we realised that we could use data and AI technology to enable a completely new way of learning. Our goal became to develop a data-driven and personalised learning approach that would continuously integrate into everyday work and consistently put the needs of learners at the centre.

Today, we are excited to continue developing our solution and helping even more people achieve their full potential. We are particularly motivated by seeing learners develop their skills in a sustainable way and having fun while doing so. This confirms that our approach of rethinking learning and truly integrating it into everyday work is the right one.

How does your application work and how do our colleagues at ERGO benefit from it?

Florian: We are taking a new approach to personalised learning. Our solution differs fundamentally from traditional platforms in that it moves away from pre-packaged learning paths and training and instead relies on AI-generated, hyper-personalised learning experiences.

The application is very easy for ERGO employees to use: they receive individually created microlearning content via familiar communication channels such as email. This content continuously adapts to their needs and can be seamlessly integrated into their daily work. With each piece of feedback, the learning experience evolves dynamically, taking into account the learner's growing competencies and individual skills.

Theresa: The particular added value lies in the intelligent use of ERGO's own expert knowledge: our technology – a so-called RAG architecture – processes the existing company knowledge in all its formats and uses it to develop customised learning content. Unlike conventional AI solutions, these are not based on general knowledge, but specifically reflect ERGO's specific industry and company knowledge – of course, in compliance with the IDD, which is very important in your industry.

Our solution is already proving its worth in three of ERGO's core areas: in broker sales, in innovation and in classic employee development. In doing so, we specifically relieve the burden on the subject matter experts so that they can fully concentrate on their strategic tasks.

The topic of growth and scaling is existential for every start-up. What does it mean to you to be part of the ERGO ScaleHub?

Theresa: As an AI-driven microlearning solution, we see enormous potential for digital, personalised learning in the insurance industry. The ERGO ScaleHub quickly convinced us with its pragmatic approach: instead of lengthy processes, it enables a fast but structured way to implement and scale our solution. The combination of professional expertise and entrepreneurial freedom was crucial for us!

By working closely with ERGO experts, we can optimally adapt our solution to the specific requirements of the industry. Our goal is not only to grow technologically, but also to develop a deep understanding of the insurance industry.

Florian: As an international start-up with offices in Düsseldorf and Eindhoven, we see particularly great potential for scaling within the ERGO Group. ERGO's international presence offers us the opportunity to establish our solution in different markets. We plan to initially consolidate our position in German-speaking countries and then gradually expand into other European markets.
